UJ Digital: Online Learning Opportunities at the University of Johannesburg

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) officially launched its UJ Digital project on the 21st of May 2025. The UJ Digital is an alternative route to higher education through Short Learning Programmes (SLPs) and non-subsidized Whole Programmes (WPs), since many learners struggle to secure admissions, and many universities are under significant pressure to accommodate students. This is a great initiative by the University because it offers programmes that are in high demand, which will equip learners with great expertise and an opportunity to be employable.

Why UJ Digital?

The UJ Digital Platform forms part of the University’s 2035 Strategic Plan that focuses on future-ready education. By 2030, UJ anticipates enrolling around 5,000 online students. UJ Digital provides a credible alternative to unaccredited online courses that are backed by the University of Johannesburg’s reputation and accreditation. These Programmes are designed to meet industry needs in an ever-changing economy.

What Does UJ Digital Offer?

UJ Digital provides academic excellence with online convenience, this includes:

1. Short Learning Programmes (SLPs)

The SLPs are short courses offered by UJ. While they are not full qualifications like a degree or diploma, they’re, however, skill-based and very practical. They’re free and paid short courses which cover Topics like financial literacy, workplace skills, artificial intelligence, and more.

2. Whole Programmes (WPs)

The Whole Programmes (WPs) were created for students who want a recognized academic qualification but prefer the flexibility of online learning. The full qualifications are delivered entirely online, and these include business, IT, Law, Engineering, Health, and more. The qualifications are built with the same academic standards as UJ’s on-campus programs and, unlike the short learning programmes(SLP), Whole Programmes are formally registered on the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) framework.

3. Flexibility & Accessible Learning

The Courses that are offered through the UJ Digital offer flexibility as learners have the opportunity to study anywhere and anytime and balance their work or personal commitments. Some programmes may include structured assessments or deadlines to keep learners on track.

4. Student Support & Resources

As a Student, you will have access to UJ’s digital library, academic advisors, and any technical help that you might need. Students will have access to online forums and webinars where they can interact and collaborate with other students.

Who Can Benefit?

UJ Digital was designed for full-time professionals who want to upskill themselves while working, as well as students who can’t attend campus-based classes. It also benefits individuals who want to learn, gain new knowledge, or improve their personal growth. In addition, it provides Companies an opportunity to equip their employees with future-ready skills.

Costs & Accessibility

The various short courses (SLPs) are free and available to the public, while full qualifications require upfront payment and are unfortunately currently not funded by NSFAS or government subsidies. The UJ Digital platform is accessible to learners in South Africa and internationally.
